Ipod Backup Image

Published by Negotive under Apple, Code

Working on helping a buddy recover his music from his Ipod. It is actually easier than it sounds, can do it mostly using the tools that come with your computer :)

The following commands will create a backup image of the ipod, a bit for bit copy, named ipod.img on your desktop.

IPOD_DEV=`mount | grep hfs | grep -v ‘/ (’ | awk ‘{print $1}’ | sed -e ’s/s[0-9]$//g’` && \
dd if=$IPOD_DEV of=~/Desktop/ipod.img

Depending on the size of the iPod, it will take a long time, so be patient :)

After the image is created you can use your favorite recovery tool, whether it being foremost or photorec, to recover the files from the image.

Great times in Alaska

Published by Negotive under Alaska

Apparently I don’t update enough, figure once a month is pretty good ;)

Work has been going great, I mostly go with the flow. More projects are coming up that keep me busy. Most of the time I go through all of the scripts I have written at work, and rewrite them. Which may seem a bit redundant, or even busy work, but I have learned quite a bit since most have been written. This one in particular I was able to cut it down in half (went from 220 lines of code down to ~100). I don’t normally use a lot of short-hand code, but there have been speed improvements and it looks cooler :D

A few months back the gang got together for a Rock Band party. We rocked all night with our cool outfits and our mad skillz. It was a blast and I look forward to the next one. I finally got hold of a larger TV, so I am thinking of holding the next one at my here. It will be a blast !

Below is a picture of Emily, Myself (Steve), Laura, and Jeri in the Twist ‘n Twirl at the state fair in August. It was great fun. Especially since we got some awesome momentum and that thing spun the entire time :D

Most of my free time these days is spent hanging out with friends. I was at Emily’s house one night for a movie, her and Jeri were working on their projects. I had no projects so they started to teach me how to knit. Below is a picture of ‘Little Steve’, at the moment it looks more like binary sudoku than a scarf, but it’s getting there :)

This past Friday (9/19/2008) was Talk like a Pirate Day, and we celebrated it awesome…even had cake :) Yes matey, it was a fine day to knit and talk like pirates, arrr.

What be a pirate’s favorite letter ? P, it is like an R but missing a leg!

Most of this month I have been trying to go up to Flat Top Mountain again. I climbed it last year with coworkers and had a blast. This year though, the weather has not been with us. Last Saturday on the other hand, the weather was not too bad. My friend Laura and I went on up to Flat Top to conquer it !

A view of Flat Top from the trail, doesn’t look that tough ;)

On our trek up to the top, the patches of blue berries distracted us. We spent the day picking 24 ounces worth of blue berries :) I have mine frozen, great on oatmeal. Now I want to learn to make jam :D

Found a Moon Pie yesterday, and a glacier

Published by Negotive under Alaska

I made the drive down to Seward, Alaska, this saturday. It was a pretty drive, nice and long too. I had no cell reception most of the drive, so I am glad I didn’t have any car issues ;)

Having drove that far I came across a few sets of jerks. It is a pet-peeve of mine when a truck or car is driving under the speed limit and backing up traffic. He had 6 cars behind him going 15 under the speed limit. There were plenty of opportunities for this truck to pull over and let us pass, he was just being dumb.

The other kind is the slow driver that speeds up when you attempt to pass. Again I am behind this dude who is going 10 miles under the speed limit. We have a straight away and I am able to pass. As I am doing so he speeds up as well, I had to accelerate up to 85 mph to pass this jerk. My passing lane was coming to an end so I had no problem cutting him off :)

The trip was fun though, I visited the Sea Life Center. The Sea Life Center is similar to the Newport Aquarium, but not as large. My only complaint is that there were no otters. Seals and Sea-Lions are cool and all, but otters are just so cute ;)

While I was down there I went over and visited Exit Glacier. That was my first time seeing a glacier and it was pretty big. There were two trails, one went up to the edge of the glacier, the other went to the toe. Now, the toe can be tricky to get to. There is run off from the glacier and silt. So there are constantly little streams that change all the time. I was chilling with a group and we made our way from island to island until we came to the toe of the glacier. We had to wade through knee high glacier water to do it. That water was pretty cold ! By the time they thawed off at the car they were burning :D

The glacier was neat though, lots of bright blue patches. Never seen ice like it before.

I have to say the highlight of the entire trip though was the moon pie I found in the service station of the gas station. I had to pay about $5 a gallon in gas, but the moon pie was worth it I think. Full of chocolate and marshmallow goodness :D Not exactly healthy, but it made a great dinner along with the pack of nerds :D

Photos from the dip-netting trip

Published by Negotive under Alaska

My sister says my photo album sucks, so I am going to do more work on it so it is less sucky :)

Here are some pictures from the dip-netting trip last month. For those that are unaware of what dip-netting is. It is basically how Alaskans mine for fish. I am not a residence so I was unable to participate this year, but next year I will catch me some fishies !

The seagulls were very excited about the fish after they’ve been gutted and we caught a lot. I think the final count of fish was around 500. I just wish I could farm that well in game :)

Yet another reason to move to Eagle River

Published by Negotive under Alaska, Apple

That is one strong bear, can even see the calf being thrown in the air over the hill. Bears are so neat to watch ! I don’t know a lot about bears, but I do know they are very protective over their kills and kids. The guys in the end were not too smart imo.

Baby Bat Found in Bra

Published by Negotive under 42

I came across an interesting story today.

When I was driving to work I felt a slight vibration but I thought it was just my mobile phone in my jacket pocket.

‘It was quite a busy morning and I did not for one minute think it was anything other than my mobile.’

I plucked up the courage to investigate and I pulled out a little baby bat.

I don’t know about you, I call this story ballocks. I don’t see how it could be possible. If it crawled in while it was in the drawer (open drawer perhaps), I assume bras are flipped around when they are being put on. Wouldn’t the bat wake up and fly away at that point or get frightened when a boobie is pressed against it ? If it was post strap-on, then how did it burrow its way in without notice ?

Not sure, I might just not have enough imagination ^^

Photos dot Imsteve dot Net

Published by Negotive under Alaska

I finally found time to work on this project this week. I actually spent five hours this morning — midnight to 5a.m. — to finish up the IE v7 support.

In the end I still needed a couple of IE specific hacks that i had to use in my javascript code ( which I should probably clean up :D ). The main source of headaches with IE and Javascript is that it seems ‘onClick’ is broken when you attempt to set it via the “setAttribute” method.

For the most part the site acts and looks the same in Firefox, Safari, Camino, & IE v7.

Any thoughts, comments, or concerns ? Now to add some more albums :)

Why so serious ?!?

Published by Negotive under Entertainment

Just got back from the Dark Knight, I have to say it was a fantastic film. I thought it was funny how the joker was portrayed very closely to the comic version. Especially when it comes to his origin …. he has told so many lies who knows which is the truth (if any).

The only gripe I had about the film was how Christian Bale did the Batman voice. I cannot put my finger on it, but I just didn’t like it. He did a great job and I would see this film again in a heart beat.

Considering the show is sold out over the weekend in most places, I don’t want to ruin anything about the film. Just see it when you can. It is awesome !

Grand list of RPG cliches

Published by Negotive under Games, Humor

Came across this today and been going through the list. Out of all the RPGs I have played a good deal of these matched, especially:

Last Law of Travel (Big Joe Rule)
As has been described, you must endure great trials just to get from town to town: locating different vehicles, operating ancient transport mechanisms, evading military blockades, the list goes on. But that’s just you. Every other character in the game seems to have no trouble getting to any place in the world on a moment’s notice.

I always wondered what was up, now that I know this traveling anomily is a law, I can rest peacefully now :)

Edit:

Hehe, another one that is so very true :)

Apocalypse Any Time Now
The best time to do side quests is while the huge meteor hovers in the sky above the planet, waiting to fall and destroy the world.

Ways not to fire a disgruntled system admin…

Published by Negotive under Pebkac

I came across this article today. San Francisco’s Department of Technology attempted to fire this dude, but it appears he didn’t like that. He locked all other administrators out of the system, now only his account has access.

He is sitting in jail with four counts of computer tampering. My guess is that he will probably use this as leverage to get off or a lighter sentence. Especially since it will cost the city “millions” to crack his password.

Most smart companies disable someone’s access and then walk them out. It appears he may have been told to clear his stuff out and still had access for this, or he knew it was coming and was prepared.

My question is why they cannot just change the password themselves. I don’t know the platform of their systems (assuming either Windows or some flavor of Unix). My point is they have physical access to the equipment, I would think with that access they could get access without paying millions of dollars.
